Nutritional Requirement During Flowering Stages of Cannabis

Cannabis plant requires a good amount of the right nutrients to survive. The requirement of nutrients is variable at different growth stages. Soil is a natural resource of minerals and nutrients but continuous growth in the same soil/site causes depletion of nutrients, so these nutrients must be supplied by some external source to overcome nutritional deficiencies and hindrances in plant growth and development.

Requirement of nutrients at the flowering stage is slightly different than the vegetative stage. Cannabis needs for nitrogen are significantly reduced at the flowering stage, but phosphorus and potassium should be applied in more amount. Phosphorus is essentially helpful to promote the production, and growth of flowers, and buds and helps to achieve high quality and quantity of yield. Whereas, nutritional needs are reduced to zero at the end of the flowering stage and maturity stages.

Optimal Application of Macronutrients, and Macronutrients

Cannabis requires all macronutrients and micronutrients at flowering stage; however, the requirement of each nutrient is greatly variable. Phosphorus has a direct role in the development of floral structure and terpene resins. Moreover, it also helps in the formation of starches, and sugars.

Even, the overall vigor of the cannabis plant is greatly dependent on the bioavailability of phosphorus. Potassium is essentially helpful to develop healthy metabolism of plants during the flowering stages and helps to produce healthy, and nutritional rich clusters of flowers.

Nutritional Requirement in Starting Weeks of Flowering

More nutrients should be applied when the buds start getting bigger in size. However, growers should pay good attention to the reaction of cannabis plants after nutrient application. 5th and 6th week of flowering is considered a peak period for the cannabis flowering development and cannabis strains. This is the critical and sensitive stage for cannabis production, so nutritional contents should be regularly checked in soil and plant leaves by using some efficient and reliable testing methods.

Depending on the size of flowers or buds, a one-time application of nutrients may not be enough to give the desired product. N application should be significantly reduced as it is important for vegetative growth only. However, plants have higher requirements of calcium, and it must be supplied by a good source. Nutritional stress should be greatly avoided at this stage to prevent reduced growth, and stunting. Stress can promote self-pollination in the female flowers and will exert negative effects on cannabis production.

Nutritional Requirements at Final Stages of Flowering

6th, 7th, and 8th weeks of flowering are final developmental stages for most of the cannabis strains. At this stage, buds are firm, dense, and are provided with a good layer of trichomes. At this stage, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium are most required nutrients. However, all the nutrients must be flushed 2 weeks before harvesting. This flushing will cause yellow coloration of the leaves as all the nutrients present in the foliage will be consumed.

4R’s for Nutritional Management during Flowering Stage

Shifting of the vegetative stage to flowering stage of the cannabis plant is very tricky, and applied concentration and bioavailability of nutrients should be managed with great care at this time. Selection of right amount, right source, right time, and right place will significantly help to boost cannabis development, and production at the flowering stage. Moreover, right management also leads to improved taste, flavor, aroma, and effectiveness.
